Ho ho ho! It's time to write to Santa.
What do we writers really want?
Instead of asking for the newest gadgets under our tree, what if we request inspiration for our writing?
What if we ask Santa to bring us patience, or confidence, or other qualities that help us begin and finish the best story we can write?
This year, I'm asking for:
- Belief in myself when I lose faith in my story.
- Perseverance when I'm writing yet another draft.
- Humility to ask for help from a teacher or another writer when I need it.
- Curiosity to keep looking for great story ideas.
- Genius--just kidding, but wouldn't it be nice?
How about you? What qualities would you like to find under your tree?
It's that time of year again. Time to write to Santa.
I'm not asking for the latest tablet, a spiffy dictionary, or the newest bells-and-whistles computer.
Once again I'm asking Santa for words. After all, isn't that what we writers really need?
Here's my letter to Santa from last year. Santa is magical, so why not ask him for help with our writing?
Here's my "wish-list" to the big guy in red.
1. An engaging, struggling character who comes to life on the page.
2. A unique setting that draws my readers in.
3. Descriptions that paint a visual picture in words.
4. Just the right adverbs--sparingly, to give some verbs that extra oomph.
5. A brilliant, fabulous, magnificent title that entices someone to say, "I have to read that!"
What's on your list? What will make your stories prance and jingle their way across the page next year?
If you could ask Santa for help with your writing, what would you ask for? No, not a brand new MacBook. I'm thinking more about....words!

My Writer's List to Santa
1. An opening line that makes the reader say, "Wow!"
2. Powerful verbs that tackle, explode, and roar.
3. A cliffhanger "stay-up-all-night-reading" end to each chapter.
4. Dialogue that makes the characters jump off the page.
5. An ending that leaves the reader laughing, crying, and pondering life--all at the same time.
